Queensland Speak Easy Camp at Mt Alford, 10 to 13 June

Anyone who has completed the Ezy-Speech Program can join their state Speak Easy Association. There is no better way to practise technique than with like-minded people. The Qld Speak Easy Association (QSEA) has an annual fluency camp at Mt Alford Lodge in the Scenic Rim Region of South East Queensland in June every year. The goals of the camp are fun, fluency and fellowship.

One of the best nights of the year: to start the camp on the Friday night, Speak Easy members and their spouses meet at the cosy Dugandan Hotel near Boonah. This year was no different - members all gathered at the familiar ‘Dugie’ for some sustenance and a good catch-up before the night’s proceedings at The Lodge. Techniques were put into gear and buffed up in readiness for two and a half days of good fluency management mixed in with some fun and fellowship.

Back at The Lodge, a warm welcome from the Association president led the way for an exciting ice breaker which had us pondering and talking about particular experiences in our lives. After a general reminder of fluency management expectations for the duration of the camp, we enjoyed our supper.

For the third year running, four members drove to nearby Boonah to participate in a local radio interview on Saturday morning. This was very successful and an important exercise in speaking outside in the real world.

All members participated in the fluency practice sessions. You can’t beat having a group of like-minded recovering stutterers all with good fluency at the top of their priority list. Fluency management was generally of a very high standard throughout the camp.

The oratory was again one of the highlights of the weekend with the highest benchmark set by one of our very own Ezy-Speech members who took out ‘Best Oratory’ for his passionate speech on goal setting. Once again we extend a very big ‘thank you’ to our much-valued speech pathologists for venturing to Mt Alford to adjudicate the oratory. Their insights into our Smooth Speech and presentation techniques are always invaluable. This year, our Ezy-Speech co-director and speech pathologist, Lisa Hudson, attended on the Sunday to mingle and offer relevant words of wisdom. Her time and effort was most appreciated.

We ended the camp on Monday with some solid practice at foundation rates followed by a chance to soap-box any ideas we had for camp improvements. The venue has been booked again for next year and we look forward to meeting at the Dugie in just under 12 months’ time.
