Recover From Stuttering - Carpe Diem - Seize the Day

Newsletter 25: March 2012

Carpe Diem: this phrase from a Latin poem by Horace has been popularly translated as "seize the day". It is a powerful motto for us all. For those of you who chose Achieving Fluency as a New Year's Resolution, perhaps you could adopt this phrase as your slogan. It can help to motivate you each day of your fluency journey.

Recent research into motivation shows that while 52% of participants in a Resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals!

Why is only a tiny percentage of people actually achieving their resolutions? Where are we going wrong?

If you want to be part of that 12% and make some significant positive changes in 2012… get ready to uncover the big mistake you might have been making: Working On Your Goals When You Are Feeling Below Par.

Not a good idea! We are all motivated to move either towards pleasure or away from pain. Our aim is to increase our feelings of happiness or decrease our unhappiness.

Think about your fluency goals and identify what drives you. Do you want to achieve fluency because you think about how great you are going to feel, or because you can’t stand the thought of stuttering or feeling dysfluent?

We often resolve to change things in our lives when we are sad or angry… and have hit a threshold, the point of no return.

The better you feel, the easier it will be to do the things you need to do. So, you want to make it so that you look forward to doing the things you need to do, e.g. to improve your fluency.

When you are tired, sad, in a bad mood… you don’t feel like doing anything except possibly feeling sorry for yourself. You need to be able to change your state of mind so that no matter how you feel at any given moment, you get to feel good as soon as possible! Why? Because there are things you need to get on with! Everything seems easier and more enjoyable when we are feeling great!

To maximise your chances for success, it needs to be about you. It needs to be about what you want to do, because… you want to do it. Carpe diem.
