Recover From Stuttering - Start the New Year With a Positive Focus

Newsletter 35: January 2013

As you start the New Year, focus on the positive changes you wish to make regarding your speech, but also reflect on times during 2012 when you did not feel comfortable stuttering. Was it fear that stopped you from using your fluency technique?

Fear stops many people in their tracks before they even get started. Taking a step in a new direction brings up many images in our minds of "What if...?"

Do any of these sound familiar?

"What if I sound odd?"
"What if I make a fool out of myself?"
"What will my friends/family think of me if I speak slowly?" [Remember, initially speaking at slower rates using the Ezy-Speech technique forms a firm foundation for natural fluency.]

You start to convince yourself that maybe it's better not to rock the boat - to keep stuttering ... Just stay where it's familiar, even if that familiar place is sucking the life out of you.

You may have heard the acronym for fear - 'False Evidence Appearing Real'. Another one is 'Forget Everything And Run!'

Ask yourself this: Is your stutter preventing you from living to your full potential? Are you prepared to move past fear in order to manage your fluency successfully?

Start flipping the "what ifs" to a positive possibility. "What if I can do this?" "What if I'm successful at managing my fluency, and my family and friends are proud of me for achieving this?" How does that feel? Really allow yourself to get into the feeling of success and all the good things you might expect from speaking fluently. Feel it in your body. What you choose to focus on expands. Where are you placing your focus?

When you let fear stop you, you rob not only yourself, but others who may have benefited from your full potential. Just keep moving forward. Keep your vision out in front of you and progress with a committed purpose.

When you have confidence and belief in yourself, you will see that mirrored back to you. Taking action toward achieving fluent speech can be empowering and increase your sense of aliveness. It dispels fear and gets energy flowing.

If you feel the desire to manage your fluency, do what you need to do to make it happen. Shift the fear into excitement and stay committed to the process.

"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." - William Shakespeare
